There comes a time in every woman’s life when she looks in the mirror and wonders if her haircut is making her look older. I don’t believe that haircuts have an expiration date, but I do believe that there are a few things you can do with your haircut that can take years off your face, or at least help minimize the years a little. So don’t worry, I’m not going to suggest that you cut all your hair off or get a perm.
These tips can be incorporated into just about any haircut or length and are guaranteed to help you turn back the hands of time.
1. It’s All About the Layers
Long flowing hair is beautiful and youthful, but one-length hair isn’t doing anything for the years on your face. When your hair’s length is too long and unshaped without layers, it draws your face down and makes you look older than necessary. Layers that draw the eye up, give your hair movement, create shape, and amplify volume are key to looking younger. Whether you choose to have long hair, short hair, or anything in between, when it comes to looking younger, layers are your best friend.
2. Frame Your Face
Another haircut trick to tick the years off your face is to add soft face-framing layers to your haircut. These shorter hairs around your face give an instant facelift and can help mask some of the father time’s not so generous gifts. Not only does a little face-framing help camouflage wrinkles, but it can also help slim your face as well. Who knew that the right layers can take 10 years and 10 pounds?
3. Try Bangs
One of the fastest ways to bring out your youthful glow is to add bangs to your haircut. Bangs are great for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and forehead, and they instantly give your face a lift by drawing the eye up. Bangs are easy to style and look great with just about any haircut. There’s not a one-size-fits-all rule for bangs, so work with your hairstylist to choose bangs that will best fit your face shape and your personality. Bangs are also great for keeping your hair looking fresh and styled, even on days when you pull it up in a ponytail or a bun.
4. Volumizing Texture
Volume and texture incorporated into your hairstyle can do wonders for making you look younger than you are. Straight flat hair can look stringy and thin, making you look older, droopy, and otherwise boring. Ask for texture and volume in your haircut, especially in the crown area. When styling your hair, try adding texture with waves and a little curl to your hair to skim the years right off.
5. Healthy Ends
One of the best ways to keeping you looking young is to keep your hair healthy and your ends clean and crisp. As we age, our hair can grow thinner and more brittle, resulting in more breakage. Take good care of your hair and get yourself on a regular haircut schedule to keep your look youthful, fresh, and healthy. Not only will you look younger, but beautiful, healthy hair is a great way to feel younger as well.
6. Does Length Really Matter?
While I don’t think that anyone length of hair will make you look younger, I do believe that really long hair isn’t helpful in taking the years off your look. Not only does really long hair drag your face down, but let’s face it ladies, really long hair is harder to maintain as our hair grows older, thinner, and frailer. Keeping the length above the collarbone helps to make incorporating the other tips that I discussed a lot easier to pull off, plus your hair will look fuller and more healthy.
If you were blessed with a full, thick head of mature hair, however, by all means, rock that length.
