I am a big fan of the incredible, edible egg, and when I discovered that eggs are good for a whole lot more than my favorite breakfast, I have to admit I wasn’t surprised. As it turns out, eggs can be used in all sorts of beauty routines. Eggs jam-packed full of life’s building blocks, it’s no wonder that eggs would also be great for improving the condition of your hair or your skin. You can easily make a simple homemade hair mask with the help an egg or two.
Egg masks are perfect for damaged, dry, and greasy hair and scalp concerns. Before you dive into creating your at home hair mask determine what kind of help you hair needs. You can pick and choose the part of the egg that will best suit your hair’s particular challenges and needs.
Greasy Scalp Egg Mask
If you battle a greasy or oily scalp, a simple at home egg mask can be a welcome addition to your normal hair routine.
Separate the egg whites from the egg yolks, and gently whip the egg whites for thirty seconds. Apply the egg whites only to clean damp hair and gently work the egg whites into your hair and scalp. You’ll need two to four egg whites, depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Obviously, longer hair will require more. Leave the mixture on your hair for about 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse very well in cool water. This egg mask is great for balancing an oily scalp and can be used as often as two to three times a month.
Dry Hair and Scalp Egg Mask
If your hair is dry, or brittle or damaged you will simply do the opposite of the Greasy Scalp Egg Mask, described above. Instead of using the egg whites, however, you’ll use only egg yolks.
Again, you’ll need two to four egg yolks depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Gently whip the yolks together before applying the mixture to your clean, damp hair and scalp. If your scalp is dry, gently massage the yolks into your scalp. If your scalp isn’t dry, you can just work the yolks into the midshaft and ends of your hair.
Leave the yolks on your hair for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse very well in cool water. You will notice an immediate moisture boost in your hair after using an egg yolk hair mask, and you can repeat the process monthly, as needed. Better than a deep conditioner? Absolutely.
Whole Egg Mask for Normal Hair
If your hair is rather normal and neither dry nor oily, try a whole egg mask. Whip two to three whole eggs together until well blended and apply the mixture to your clean towel-dried hair, working well into your hair and scalp. Now, leave the egg mixture on your hair for about 20 to 30 minutes and rinse very well in cool water. Whole egg masks can be applied one to two times per month as needed for increased moisture and strength.
Important Considerations When using an Egg Mask
There’s not a lot to know about using an egg mask. It’s a simple, one ingredient mask that promises to leave your hair feeling rejuvenated and with a boost of vital nutrients for improved strength, increased body, and moisture to your hair.
The most important thing to remember is to rinse very very well in cool water. Cool water is important as eggs don’t take a whole lot of heat to start cooking. If your mask is going to work properly, your eggs should remain in liquid form. Use cool water and stay out of the sun to prevent a scrambled egg situation on your head.
Egg White Mask: How To and Skin Benefits – Make Your Own Facial Mask with Egg Whites
Eggs are high in protein, cheap to buy, and almost everyone can say they have a carton in their fridge. Have you ever thought of using one of those eggs in your skin care regimen? You might want to consider giving an egg white mask a try! Egg whites can actually help your skin in several different ways. Making an egg white mask is super easy, affordable, and fun to do.
How Egg Whites Benefit The Skin
Egg whites are high in collagen and a little bit of protein which can improve skin tone.
Specifically, the albumin protein in eggs can make your skin feel tighter. The eggshell membrane – the layer between the egg shell and the egg white – is also said to have anti-aging benefits for the skin. Some experts believe that egg whites remove excess oil and unwanted dead skin cells.
Egg white masks are good for acne and for wrinkles.
When using an egg white on areas that have wrinkles, the egg white will temporarily tighten and firm the skin. It’s a great mask option before a special occasion. (Like your high school reunion!)
When it comes to acne, the egg whites will help reduce the excess oil which causes acne. Used bi-weekly, you should see the skin benefits in little time. Many people with oily, acne prone skin swear that using this mask greatly improved the look and feel of their skin.
How To Make An Egg White Mask
Simply crack the egg and separate the white from the yolk and whisk until broken up. Using a paintbrush or your fingers, brush onto skin and let dry. If you are treating your skin for acne or oily skin, apply to your entire face.
If you’re targeting wrinkles, apply to areas you’d like to tighten.
Let sit on your face for about 10 to 15 minutes or until dry. Some people like to add tissue paper to the wet egg white to help with removing, but it’s not necessary and you can simply remove with a wet, warm washcloth.
Don’t Want To Make It? Buy It!
If you would rather eat the eggs you purchased instead of whipping up a skin care mask there are more than a few skin care products that contain egg whites.
This ingredient has become quite a hit in Korean skin care products and can be found in facial cleansers, blackhead removers, and masks. Look for products like Skinfood Egg White Pore Foam which not only deeply cleans the skin but smooths it as well. Use TONYMOLY Egg Pore Tightening Cooling Pack once a week to deep clean your skin. Korean skin care manufacturers are not the only ones using egg whites in their products. Swedes have been enjoying the skin care benefits of this ingredient for a long time by using Lanolin-Agg-Tval Eggwhite Facial Care Soap to cleanse their skin. Not to be left out, the American company Perricone MD uses eggshell membranes in its Perricone MD OVM in order to harness this ingredient’s anti-aging benefits.
