With the constant barrage of grooming products I experience on a weekly basis, I’ve gotten to the point where I think I’ve seen it all — these days not much impresses me. When I came across Jack Black Epic Moisture MP10 Nourishing Oil, I didn’t expect much. I was wrong. The stuff is amazing. What does it do? Well, a little bit of everything.
Jack Black Epic Moisture MP10 Nourishing Oil is a great pre-shave oil, a lightweight moisturizer for the hair and skin.
It really almost creates a new category of products for men. It’s a shaving product, moisturizer, and styling product in one (heck, it could also be used to lubricate other things in a pinch, if you know what I mean).
A Pre-Shave Oil
As a pre-shave oil, this product is one of the best I’ve experienced.
My complaint about most pre-shave oils is that they’re either too thick or too thin, but this one falls right in the middle. For those who have light beards, this could even be used as a stand-alone shave oil. As a pre-shave, you simply massage a few pumps into your beard and then apply your usual shaving cream. The oil adds an excellent extra layer of lubrication which will help prevent razor drag and razor burn (but it’s light enough not to clog your blade). I highly recommend incorporating this oil into your shaving routine — using pre-shave oil is one of my steps in getting the best shave possible.
Note: I should mention that, in my tests, the Jack Black Oil did prevent the three shaving creams I tried it with from lathering.
That said, I still thought the shave was better (and my skin felt great after the shave.
How to Shave with Shaving Cream for Men
The perfect shaving cream is essential for men to have a clean and perfect shave. Having the proper razors and technique is also important for a great shave. Learn how to use shaving cream for your next shave in this video.
A Moisturizer
As a moisturizer, I’ve found that it’s a very unique product. Apply just a few pumps to damp skin and Jack Black Epic Moisture MP10 Nourishing Oil will give you long-lasting moisture (it’s oil-based, so it doesn’t evaporate) that feels pretty light on the skin.
Note: I’ve found this works best when applied after a shower and BEFORE towel drying (wiping off the excess is a good idea). You’re probably thinking, “Huh? Oil as a moisturizer?” It’s a unique dry kind of oil that’s not heavy and it absorbs faster than a lot of moisturizers on the market. One word of caution, however, it contains no SPF, so I would recommend using this as a nighttime moisturizer (or at times you won’t be in the sun).
A Hair and Beard Conditioner
This concoction of oils can also be used very sparingly on hair to provide shine and control flyaways and frizz without making you look like you’ve got anything in your hair at all. I especially recommend this for guys trying to control frizz in curly hair. I also have clients who often tell me they think their hair looks best if the day after they wash it — this stuff can help give you that same look.
This review is beginning to sound like a late-night infomercial. But wait! There’s more! Perhaps my favorite use of this is as a beard oil. Rubbing two or three pumps through the beard (and skin) really helps soften the beard and add shine and control. I often recommend beard oil to my clients and, as such, this really does a great job.
The Bottom Line
The ingredients include Argan Oil (a good skin moisturizer), Moringa Seed Oil (firms the skin), Marula Seed Oil (helps calm redness), Watermelon Seed Oil, Plum Seed Oil, Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil (which calms inflammation), Jojoba Oil, and Rice Bran Oil.
Overall, I find that this incredibly lightweight oil penetrates quickly and doesn’t feel greasy. As I type this, I’ve got the stuff off my hands and face (after towel drying) and they don’t feel greasy at all. The product also has a nice, clean fragrance, too.
I’m not finding a whole lot to complain about here. If anything, at around $32 I could say that it’s a little expensive, but the 2-ounce jar should last the average guy quite a long time (I have a bottle of The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil) that I’ve had for a couple of years now. Jack Black Epic Moisture MP10 Nourishing Oil is available in stores that carry Jack Black products or online for around $34.
With so many varied uses, I would highly recommend picking up a bottle of this. It’s one of the most useful and unique products I’ve tried in a number of years — the Jack Black folks hit a home run with this stuff. I will be adding this to my list of favorite men’s grooming products.
