One of the biggest components of a 1970′s throwback is a great piece of patchwork denim.
The ’70s trend is in full force for Fall. But if you’re like me, taking too much inspiration from any decade can get real costume-y, real quick.
But one of the biggest components of a 1970′s throwback is a great piece of patchwork denim. And no, it doesn’t necessarily need to be jeans and it definitely doesn’t need to be flared jeans. Patched denim jackets, skirts, even clutches, will add a ’70s inspo to any outfit. It’s really hard to go wrong with a killer piece of denim.
The easiest way to incorporate patched denim into your wardrobe is to find a piece that you can wear with multiple things. Jeans are the best way to go about it, but an awesome chevron skirt or great denim jacket also really works well to mix and match. And since they aren’t super ’70s inspired, you won’t have to worry about these going out of style.
Here are 10 pieces of patchwork denim you should be wearing for Fall.
Urban Renewal Recycled French Workwear Patched Overall (Urban Outfitters, $98)
Overalls will always be adorable, but a super light wash with dark patches is just the perfect vintage-inspired piece to completely change up a t-shirt or sweater.
Waven True Boyfriend Jeans With All Over Japanese Patchwork Detail (ASOS, $105)
This style of patchwork denim is probably my favorite. The slouchy boyfriend style with tone-on-tone dark patches with just one distressed accent is so chic, without looking like your jeans are falling apart.
Denim A-Line Mini Skirt With Chevron Patchwork (ASOS, $50.16)
A chevron, the patchwork denim skirt is probably the most ’70s inspired piece on this list (especially when paired with that striped sweater) but if you throw on a great t-shirt, chunky booties with tights, and a leather jacket, you’ve got an amazing, edgy outfit.
RACHEL COMEY Composite Top (La Garçonne, $162.50)
At first, this top looks like it could be linen or another breathable, light fabric. The structured, dark denim is softened by the lighter wash and the patterned isn’t too overwhelming.
Melissa McCarthy Seven7 Patch Detail Roll Cuff Girlfriend Jeans (Nordstrom, $128)
Again, a great pair of patchwork boyfriend jeans are the way to go if you’re just starting out incorporating them into your wardrobe. Plus, the dual-toned patches add a great depth to otherwise plain slouchy jeans.
Current/Elliott The Stiletto Ankle Jeans (Neiman Marcus, $288)
Okay, I had to throw in some Current/Elliot jeans in here because they 1) are usually incredibly on the nose of trends and 2) they have so many different styles, it’s hard not to include one.
Boohoo Patched Denim Jacket (ASOS, $32.25)
While I wouldn’t necessarily condone a Canadian Tuxedo skirt/jacket combo, the jacket itself is really great. The patchwork is noticeable enough to be trendy, but subtle enough to not look like you raided your mom’s closet.
SoHo Jeans Patchwork Pencil Skirt (New York & Company, $35.97)
Patched denim skirts can be really tough, but this one is suuuuuper chic. I wouldn’t necessarily have gone as billowy on top, but a little volume never hurt nobody.
Milk It Denim Patchwork Clutch (ASOS, $27.50)
Like I said, denim patchwork can really come from anything. This clutch is actually fairly large and perfectly slouchy. It can probably be paired with practically everything.
