The top knot isn’t the only type of bun, although it often seems that way. When was the last time you wore your hair in a different style? FYI: Putting an accessory on your top knot doesn’t count as something different. You might have tried trendy space buns or you might have experimented with a half-up bun hairstyle, which people have started calling “huns.” However, when was the last time you tried a low bun? If you can’t remember, you’re not alone. High buns have been popular before Harry Styles grew out his hair and started rocking his own man bun.

Before everyone started twisted and teasing their hair into top knots, they were trying to figure out how exactly to use a bun ring or how to fashion their own out of a sock. Prior to that, everyone was wearing their hair in pretty ballerina buns and trying to get them to stay in place all day with just bobby pins.
Low buns have accidentally been forgotten about as we’ve tried other gravity-defying buns. Jared Leto and his low man bun attracted a lot of attention at the 2014 Golden Globes but it wasn’t enough to bring back the hairstyle. We were too busy trying to figure out how to copy his ombre look.
At CBS’ 2015 Summer TCA Party’s Emmy Rossum and Lizzy Caplan both styled their hair in low side buns with wispy tendrils framing their faces. They both looked gorgeous and effortless. Not only does is the low bun chic, it is so simple to do. Anyone can get the look and I mean anyone. Just part your hair, gather it up at the nape of your neck, and secure it with an elastic. If you want, you can make it really sleek or you can copy Emmy and Lizzy and pull a few pieces out. To get the look takes under a minute. There is no twisting or trying to slick down those little baby hairs that never want to lay flat when you’re trying to create a decent top knot.
Topknot addicts probably aren’t ready to go from a bun perched on top of their heads to one at their necks. You don’t have to give up your top knot totally but the next time you grab that hair elastic, remember that there are other buns you can try that you don’t have to pull so pull and twist so tight. Your scalp will thank you.
